Why don't yeshivos publish their tuition, and how do I find out what it really costs?
What the silence usually means, what to ask, and how to get a real number without an awkward call.
Parents notice it quickly: the same schools that publish a calendar, a dress code and a dorm policy go quiet on price. It feels like a closed door. It usually isn't. Here is what is going on, and how to get the number you need.
Why the silence
- Most yeshivos run on a published figure that only some families pay in full. Publishing it scares away the families the school most wants to help; publishing the typical figure undercuts the families who pay in full.
- Costs vary by boy: dorm or commute, meal plan, out-of-town travel, a resource program.
- Many schools are small operations. The website was built once; the tuition letter goes out each spring.
None of that is a secret. It is a conversation the school expects to have with you, one family at a time.
What the real cost includes
Ask for a full-year number and make sure it covers:
- Tuition
- Dormitory and meals
- Registration, security and building fees
- Books, trips and Shabbos programs
- Travel home, if out of town
A school that gives you only the first line is not hiding anything; it is answering the question you asked. Ask the bigger one.
How to ask
Call or email the office, not the menahel. Say: "We are looking at mesivtas for next year. Could you tell me the full annual cost for a dorm student, and how your tuition assistance process works?" That sentence gets a real answer almost every time.
When to ask
Before the application if money will decide the list. After acceptance if it won't. Either way, before the deposit.
How assistance usually works
Most schools use a form, a short conversation, and a committee or the executive director. Expect to share income and family size. Expect the answer to be a number, not a percentage. Decisions often come after acceptances, so ask when yours will.
What you will see on this site
Each profile has a tuition section. A school may show a figure, a range, a sentence about its approach, or "Contact school for details." We show whichever the school gave us and label anything they haven't shared as not shared yet. We never estimate, and we never rank by price.

Educators and administrators who work in yeshivos and mesivtas, writing what we tell friends who ask. Nothing here is sponsored, and no school is named.
Questions parents ask
- Is it rude to ask a mesivta about tuition before being accepted?
- No. Ask the office, not the menahel, and ask for the full-year cost including dorm and fees. Every school answers this question weekly.
- Why does one school list tuition and another doesn't?
- Often the second school has a bigger gap between sticker and typical. Neither is a sign of quality.
- Does ChinuchPlace show tuition?
- When a school shares it, yes: as a figure, a range, or an approach. We never require exact tuition and never estimate it.
