Israel or America for seminary? How to decide what's right for your daughter

For many families this is the first decision, before any school name comes up. It deserves to be made on its own terms.

What the Israel year gives

• Distance from home, which for the right girl is the most growing thing that can happen at eighteen.
• Immersion: Shabbos in a different city every week, a country that runs on the Jewish calendar.
• A cohort of girls going through the same year, which often becomes a lifelong circle.

What it costs

• Money: tuition plus dorm plus flights plus the costs of a year abroad.
• Supervision: even structured programs assume more independence than a high school did.
• Distance when something goes wrong: a health issue, a hard month, a family simcha missed.

What an American seminary gives

• Lower cost, often by a wide margin.
• Proximity: you can be there in hours, and she can come home for Shabbos.
• Programs that pair learning with a degree track, which some families value.
• A calmer year for a girl who is not ready to be far away.

How to decide

Answer these three honestly, together. How does she handle being away from home for a week, or a month? What does the money mean for the family and for her siblings? What is she hoping the year does for her, in her words?

If the answers point in one direction, follow them. If they split, visit one program of each kind and ask her what she noticed.

A word about pressure

Girls hear a great deal about where everyone is going. Your job is to make the decision about your daughter, and then to speak about it as settled. She will take her confidence from yours.
