When do seminary applications open, and how does the year unfold?
Applications, interviews, decisions, and the questions that matter more than the name.
Seminary decisions arrive earlier in the school year than most families expect. If your daughter is starting 12th grade, this is roughly how the year runs.
Summer before 12th: talk
Before the lists and the pressure, have the conversation about what the year is for. A year of learning, a year of growth, a year near family in Eretz Yisroel, a year that leads to a degree program. There are good seminaries for each of those, and they are not interchangeable.
Elul to Cheshvan: build the list
Her teachers and mechaneches know her and know the seminaries. Ask them first. Then ask older girls and their mothers. Look each program up here and read what the seminary itself says about who thrives there.
Three to five applications is typical. More than that and the year becomes about applying.
Cheshvan to Teves: apply and interview
Most applications are due in the late fall, with interviews in person or by video through the winter. Interviews are conversational: her learning, her interests, what she hopes for. Honest beats polished.
Shevat: decisions
Acceptances tend to come within a few weeks of each other. Deposits are usually due soon after. If she is waitlisted somewhere she loves, a respectful call from the school or a teacher can help; a dozen calls from home do not.
Questions to ask every seminary
- What does a typical day look like, and how much is classroom versus independent learning?
- Who is responsible for the girls outside of class, and how available is she?
- What happens on Shabbos, and how are girls placed for meals and hosts?
- How do you handle a girl who is struggling, academically or otherwise?
- What is the total cost, including housing, flights, and the program fees that are not in the tuition number?
- Which degree or credit programs do you work with, if that matters to us?
About cost
Seminary is expensive and the number on the website is rarely the whole number. Ask for a full list of fees in writing. Many seminaries have scholarship funds that are not advertised; ask directly and early.
Written by the ChinuchPlace team
Educators and administrators who work in yeshivos and mesivtas, writing what we tell friends who ask. Nothing here is sponsored, and no school is named.
Questions parents ask
- How many seminaries should my daughter apply to?
- Three to five. The year should be about growth, not applications.
- Are seminary interviews in person?
- Many are by video for overseas applicants; some seminaries interview in person when they visit the US.
- Is there scholarship money?
- Often, and it is rarely advertised. Ask directly and early.
